The number of birth registrations in India has decreased. According to CRS data, there were over two hundred thousand fewer birth registrations in 2023 compared to 2022, representing a decline of nearly one percent.
Although this is a minor reduction, it marks the third instance of a decrease in Indian birth registrations within the past five years. Prior reductions were noted in 2020 and 2021.

This means the birth rate is declining while the death rate is increasing. According to the report, there has been an increase of only 9,749, or 0.1%, in death registrations in 2023 compared to 2022.
The Office of the Registrar General of India (ORGI), which operates under the Ministry of Home Affairs, has recently released these statistics. This is one of the significant statistics of India based on the 2023 Civil Registration System (CRS) report.
The CRS report records all registered births and deaths in the country. Although not all births and deaths are registered, the data from the 2023 report is consistent with the survey-based estimates from the Sample Registration System (SRS) report published on September 3, 2023. The SRS report indicates that the birth and death rates in India have decreased in 2023 compared to 2022.
According to the CRS report, 25.2 million births were registered in 2023. This reflects a decrease of 232,094, or 0.9%, compared to the previous year, 2022. Conversely, the number of deaths has increased, albeit only slightly. In 2023, 8.66 million deaths were recorded, which is just 9,749, or 0.1%, higher than in 2022.
The CRS report indicates a negative trend in both birth and death rates. The institutional birth rate was 74.7%, a decrease from 75.5% in 2022. Conversely, the death rate without medical services increased from 50.7% in 2022 to 53.4% in 2023.
